Replacing and paying
Replacing a boiler brings building rules, paperwork and possibly a grant. These entries explain the words on a quote, the rules by country, and the current official figures with the date they were read.

- Replacing a boiler
Replacing a boiler is a job for a Gas Safe registered engineer on gas, and the new boiler must meet the building rules of the country it is in.
- Words on a boiler quote
A boiler quote usually mixes rule terms, such as ErP efficiency and commissioning to BS 7593, with extras such as a filter or flush, and each can be checked against its source.
- Building rules for a new boiler
Boiler building regulations differ by country: England applies Approved Document L's 2021 edition and Wales its 2022 edition, both with a 92% ErP minimum for gas boilers.
- Boiler Upgrade Scheme
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme pays £7,500 towards an air or ground source heat pump in England and Wales, through an MCS certified installer; it does not pay for a gas boiler.
- Heating grants by country
Heating grants in the UK differ by country: the Boiler Upgrade Scheme covers England and Wales, Scotland has its own grant and loan, and Northern Ireland's boiler scheme is closed.
- Heat pump or boiler
Between a heat pump and a gas boiler, official sources call heat pumps "around 3 times more efficient" and grants exist for them, but no official saving for a given home was read.
- Price cap and running costs
The energy price cap for gas is 7.97p per kWh with a 29.68p daily standing charge from 1 October to 31 December 2026, by Direct Debit, which sets the starting point for a gas boiler's running cost.
