Heating grants by country
Checked against its sources: Updated
Heating grants in the UK differ by country: the Boiler Upgrade Scheme covers England and Wales, Scotland has its own grant and loan, and Northern Ireland's boiler scheme is closed.123 All of this was read on 3 November 2026 and can change.
- Covers
- England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, as marked on each scheme.
- You
- Check the scheme's own page before spending anything, because rules change.
- A professional
- Installers named by each scheme do the work.
1 England
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme funds heat pumps and some biomass, not gas boilers1. Warm Homes: Local Grant is England-only: the home must be privately owned with an EPC of D to G, and household income must usually be £36,000 a year or less, with routes by postcode or benefit4. The page lists insulation, heat pumps, smart controls and solar panels as examples and does not mention gas boilers4.
2 Wales
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme applies here too1. The Welsh Government's Nest page says eligible households get free home energy improvements, which "could include a boiler repair or replacement, heat pump, insulation and solar panels"5. You must own or privately rent, receive a means-tested benefit or live on a low income, and have an EPC of 54 (E) or less, or 68 (D) or less with an eligible health condition8. Neither page shows a date.
3 Scotland
Home Energy Scotland offers a grant up to £7,500 for heat pumps and heat network connections, plus an optional interest-free loan up to £7,5002. Efficiency measures can get up to 75% of combined cost, to a £7,500 maximum, and a £1,500 uplift applies in rural and island areas2. Gas boilers are not in that funding table2. Heat pumps must supply all heating and hot water, so hybrids are out2.
Warmer Homes Scotland is separate, and its page lists "new gas boiler" as a possible central heating measure, depending on an assessment and eligibility based on age, medical certificates or benefits6.
4 Northern Ireland
GOV.UK says the NI Boiler Replacement Scheme is closed, and points readers to Affordable Warmth for energy help3. The Affordable Warmth page itself could not be reached, so its terms are not given here. Check nidirect directly. The Warm Home Discount below does not cover Northern Ireland9.
5 Across Great Britain
The Warm Home Discount is a one-off £150 off the electricity bill, running to 31 March 2031 in England, Wales and Scotland; the England and Wales qualifying date this winter was 23 August 2026910.
ECO4 closes on 31 December 20267. Ofgem says it is not a grant scheme and a supplier need not act, so do not plan around it for any date after that11. The Great British Insulation Scheme has closed to new installations, having ended on 31 March 202612.
The Warm Homes Plan describes low and zero interest loans and a new Warm Homes Agency, but no live application route for these was read13. VAT is covered under replacing a boiler.
