Boiler service

Checked against its sources: Updated

A boiler service at least once a year is what HSE strongly advises and what makers' manuals ask for, but HSE's page doesn't state it as a legal duty for owner-occupiers.123 Makers' guarantee terms can depend on it.6

1 What the advice says

HSE strongly advises that appliances, flues and pipework are serviced at least annually by a Gas Safe registered engineer.1 That is advice to owner-occupiers, not a duty stated on the page. In Northern Ireland, nidirect says homeowners should have annual safety checks.5 Landlords have a separate legal check, and HSE says the two aren't the same thing: see landlord gas safety record.1

2 What makers' manuals ask

Service wording in three makers' user manuals
Maker and manualWhat it says
Worcester Greenstar 8000 Life (2021/05) p6Servicing and maintenance checks at least once a year by a competent engineer2
Worcester Greenstar 4000 (2020/09) p16Free guarantee repair needs evidence of a completed record and service at least once a year6
Ideal Logic Combi (file dated 2013) p4Serviced at least once a year by a Gas Safe registered engineer4
Glow-worm Energy7 (02.03.2020) p12Annual inspection by a competent person is a prerequisite for safe, reliable operation3

Check your own manual and guarantee terms, because they differ. One exception to read with care: a Viessmann GB manual cites German rules and "at least every 2 years", which shouldn't be taken as UK advice.7

3 Between services

Baxi's Compact guide says that at each annual service the engineer will check the water in the system for sludge and debris.8 Between visits, watch the pressure gauge and the display; see boiler pressure and reading a fault code. A record of servicing also helps when selling a home, Worcester says; see Benchmark and boiler records.2

4 Oil and other fuels

For oil in Northern Ireland, nidirect says annual servicing by an OFTEC registered technician, with a flue gas analyser used to set up the boiler and check CO.9 HSE says oil, wood and coal appliances should be serviced by a competent person, and the chimney regularly swept.10
