Noisy heating
Checked against its sources: Updated
Noisy central heating usually comes from air, expanding pipes, loose pipework or debris in the system, and the type of noise points to which.12 Bleeding helps with air; banging, whistling or buzzing from the boiler is for an engineer.

- You
- Note the noise and when it happens, read the gauge and display, and bleed radiators if your manual allows.
- A professional
- Kettling, flushing, pump faults, buzzing or whining from inside the boiler, and loose pipes under floors.
1 Which noise is which
Viessmann's first step is to find where the noise comes from, because sound travels through the system and may mislead you. It also says to check the boiler display for a fault code3. See reading a fault code.
| Noise | Cause given | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Gurgling, rattling at radiators | Trapped air (Viessmann, Vaillant)12 | Bleed |
| Gurgling at the boiler | Could be a blocked condensate pipe (Worcester Bosch)4 | Contact your installer |
| Clicking, creaking, groaning | Metal expanding and contracting (Viessmann)2 | Usually normal |
| Knocking or vibration, ongoing | Pipes moving against walls or floors (Vaillant)1 | Engineer if loose |
| Banging with taps or toilets | Water hammer (Vaillant)1 | Engineer if it keeps happening |
| Rumbling or banging | Kettling, mostly in hard water areas (Viessmann)2 | Engineer |
| Whistling | Debris in the heat exchanger (Viessmann)3 | Bleed, then engineer |
| Humming or vibrating | Pump, high pressure or air intake (Viessmann)3 | Check gauge, then engineer |
| Buzzing or whining | Pump or fan bearings or burner (Viessmann)3 | Engineer |
2 What the manuals say
Few user manuals cover noise directly. Baxi group's Main Eco Compact manual says air must be removed to prevent nuisance noises, and it gives steps for venting radiators5. Baxi's quick start guide for its 400, 600 and 800 Combi 2 boilers also says to bleed radiators for noisy pipes6. Vaillant's 2023 ecoTEC plus manual warns that unsuitable water in the system causes noise as well as damage, so only suitable heating water should go in7.
3 Air, debris and pressure
Baxi lists gurgling and kettling among the signs of sludge, describing kettling as whistling, popping and bubbling8. Viessmann says that if bleeding does not stop a whistling boiler, kettling is the likely cause and an engineer should advise, since flushing does not always clear scale from the heat exchanger3. Hard water makes this more likely, as covered under limescale.
Viessmann also links gurgling and humming with boiler pressure that is too low or too high3. Read the gauge, and use your own manual's figures. A rapid rise is for an engineer.
4 Parts you should leave alone
Viessmann mentions pump speed, which sits inside the sealed casing on combi and system boilers, so an engineer needs to look at it3. Vaillant's 2017 ecoTEC pro manual says never to attempt maintenance or repairs yourself9. Where pipes are merely close to a wall, Vaillant suggests a little cloth, foam or felt between them, and it recommends an engineer for loose pipes1.
